Volunteer FAQ

Why is volunteering important?

Your time is your greatest asset to offer to a cause that means a lot to you. By giving your skillset, your energy, and your time to an organization, you are serving not only its mission, but our entire community. North Tahoe - Truckee has many nonprofit organizations and. besides funding, their greatest need is volunteer time. We believe that amidst the hundreds of nonprofit efforts in our region, there is a cause for every person living or even visiting here. We want to see our community prosper through these efforts and by connecting our neighbors through missions that matter to them.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Through volunteering in your community, you can::

·      Develop a wide range of skills in a living classroom environment that can help you attain your personal goals.

·      Explore numerous career paths without committing to any one course of action.

·      Grow as a person.

·      Meet people with likeminded interests.

·      Make a difference in your community and in the lives of others.

·      Volunteer with family or friends to bond over a common interest.

What should I consider before volunteering?

Before beginning the process of volunteering, ask yourself the following questions:

·      What do I truly care about?

·      What do I frequently wish could change in my community?

·      What are my personal goals?

·      What skills do I want to gain in my professional or personal life?

·      What skills do I currently have that I could offer to a nonprofit effort?

·      How much time do I honestly have to volunteer?

·      Do I want to volunteer by myself or with friends/family?

·      Do I have reliable transportation?

What is the time commitment?

Throughout your search, you will find many different opportunities to volunteer your time.  There are ongoing assignments, short-term assignments, and one-time assignments.  Be sure that you know how much time you can honestly commit.

What are these different categories?

The eight categories, or areas of impact, are Give Back Tahoe's way of grouping different areas of philanthropy/charity.  They include Animal Welfare, Arts and Culture, Community Improvement, Educational, Health, Humans Services, and Youth Development.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

To be considered an "adult" volunteer, you must be 18 years of age or older. A "youth volunteer" is between the ages of 14 and 18.  If you are younger than 14 years old, you must be registered by and accompanied by an adult unless otherwise stated.  Volunteer opportuinites list the minimun age required.

What skills are required to be a volunteer?

Every opportunity listing is different, but for most of them all you need to have is a desire to Give Back to Tahoe. If you do have a particular skill you would like to offer, however, there are opportunities to volunteer them to causes you care about.

For example, if you have legal experience you may find an opportunity to volunteer at a Family Resource Center.  If you are extremely organized, perhaps you can lend this skill to a nonprofit administrative position. If you are friendly and passionate about nature, consider checking with one of the conservation efforts or parks. If you speak another language or have IT experience, make sure you let your potential organizations know. There are a lot of options!

You can search volunteer opportunities by skillset at the bottom of this page.

Can I volunteer if I have a disability?

Absolutely.  There is a role and an opportunity for everyone.  Working together, we can find an opportunity that will help all of us thrive.
