SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Give the gift of local, fresh produce to those in need & Provide fresh local food to our schools.
TAHOE FOOD HUB is a 501(c)-3, non-profit organization based in Truckee, CA. We were founded in 2013 as a hub for local, sustainably-grown food.
Mission and Vision:
Our mission is to provide a food system that supports regenerative and sustainable farming practices by increasing access to local food for North Lake Tahoe. By addressing local food access challenges at a systems level, we create a hub for local food. A local food system benefits diversified, family farms looking for fair market opportunities while increasing access to local food for our mountain community Through our farm network, we connect our community with where their food comes from. Our programs educate our community on the important role a local food system has on our community, economy, and environment.
Featured Programs:
Giving Box Program: The Giving Box program provides free, local produce to those facing food insecurity in our region. Our Giving Box program complements other nutrition assistance programs and ensures people in need receive enough healthy fruits and vegetables. The program also ensures farmers are paid a fair price while recipients receive fresh, first-quality produce.
In North Lake Tahoe, we partner with Tahoe Truckee Unified School District’s Food Pantry Program, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and the Calvary Chapel to distribute Giving Boxes.
The goal of the Giving Box Program is simple: pay farmers a fair market price for their crops and provide fresh sustainably-sourced, local produce to families in need to provide relief and nutritional education. Our Giving Boxes mirror a CSA-style (Community Supported Agriculture) box, showcasing what is in season and sustainably grown.
The program started in the Fall of 2019 as an affordable way for people to donate and provide a local family a free, box of farm, fresh produce. Over 15,000 Giving Boxes have been distributed since March 2020. On average 61 boxes are distributed every week and at its peak during the pandemic, 180 boxes were being distributed.
Each box provides 3-4 meals according to USDA standards. We partner with St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the Calvary Chapel, and Tahoe Truckee Unified School District’s Food Pantry program to reach families throughout North Lake Tahoe facing food insecurity.
Farm-to-School Program: Our Farm-to-School program partners with Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD) to bring fresh, local produce from farms within 150 miles directly to the cafeteria. TTUSD feeds over 2,400 public school children daily, and their commitment to scratch cooking allows them to incorporate seasonal ingredients into their meals. This not only provides students with nutritious, locally sourced food but also supports our regional farmers. Additionally, we collaborate with Tahoe Forest Hospital for their "Harvest of the Month" program, introducing children to a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, and helping foster healthy eating habits from a young age.
To keep the program running and to keep our community fed, the Tahoe Food Hub is asking businesses and individuals to donate to this essential service. Learn more about our Giving Box program and Farm to School Program by visiting: www.tahoefoodhub.org.
